Allegany High band again wins
state title Group wins for best music, drum
major TOWSON The Allegany High School Marching
Band successfully defended its Maryland
State Band Championship title Saturday at
the 17th Annual Maryland State Band Championships
at Towson University. Twenty-five bands
from across the state competed in the day-long
event. Allegany won the title in Group III,
which designates bands fielding between
56 and 80 musicians. Allegany won specialty
awards for best music and best drum major.
Their winning score was 89.1. Alleganys
winning 2003 field show is titled Ballet
Mechanique. The show features music from
American composers George Antheil and Samuel
Barber. The band consists of 70 musicians,
nine color guards members and drum major
Sarah Dean for a total of 80 student performers.
The band is under the direction of Larry
T. Jackson, assisted by Brian T. White.
The complete order of finish in Group III
was : Allegany, 89.1; Calvary Hall College,
87.05; Patuxent, 87.0; and North Hagerstown,
80.2. Saturday evening the band also participated
in the first Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament
Marching Band Competition held at Westminster
High School. It finished in second place
in Group III with a score of 87.95. The
group won specialty awards for best auxiliary
(color guard), best marching, and best drum
major. Allegany will travel to East Pennsboro
High School on Saturday for one remaining
preliminary competition before hosting the
Chapter 13 Championships on Nov. 1 at Greenway
Avenue Stadium in Cumberland.
